Prague Medieval Underground and Dungeon: History Tour or Ghost Tour?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

A vaulted medieval stone cellar with a cobbled floor and a lit archway leading to a small library

Book the Oldtown, Medieval Underground and Dungeon History Tour if you want to see the cellars. It costs €27, lasts 85 minutes and has 4.4 stars from 11,766 reviews. The Ghosts, Legends, Medieval Underground and Dungeon Tour costs the same €27, lasts 75 minutes and takes you to the same underground, but frames it with lantern-lit lanes and ghost stories. The three evening ghost walks (€18 to €23) stay on the street and do not include the underground.

Both underground tours have the same operator, the same ticket office and the same restrictions. Read those before you book, because they exclude more people than most Prague tours do.

What “underground” means here

The booking page describes Romanesque and Gothic rooms, cellars and corridors from the 12th to 14th centuries, hidden up to two floors below the street. The tour visits a Romanesque level, a Gothic one, an alchemy laboratory with the Golem legend, and a dungeon with torture instruments and the story of the executioner Jan Mydlář and the Old Town executions of 1621.

Both underground tours promise that. The history tour is the longer one and is sold as a walk through Old Town and its underground. The ghost tour adds the dark lanes of Old Town and the former Jewish quarter, with a costumed guide and lanterns, before and around the underground part. It is ten minutes shorter.

The three ghost walks

The cheaper walks are outdoors. The Ghost Walking Tour Where Legends Come To Life meets at the statue of Charles IV on Křižovnické náměstí and ends at Old Town Square near the Astronomical Clock; the guide carries an orange umbrella. An entry ticket to the Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague museum is listed as an option. The Evening Tour from McGee’s Ghost Tours leaves from Týnská and describes itself as storytelling without jump scares or special effects. The booking page tags it as wheelchair accessible, so ask the operator about the route.

Choose a ghost walk if you want atmosphere and stories more than rooms, and if the restrictions below rule out the underground.

Who should skip the underground tours

The booking pages of both underground tours list the following as not suitable: children under 8 years, people with mobility impairments, people with claustrophobia, wheelchair users and babies under 1 year. Their notes add that the tour is not possible with a wheelchair or stroller because of the walking and the stairs, and not for people with heart issues, and that small children under school age are not allowed. The two statements on age do not match, so ask the operator if you are travelling with a child around that age.

Also on the pages: there are no toilets underground, the tour is a walk, and comfortable shoes are advised. Alcohol and drugs, intoxication, bachelor party groups, costumes, pets and smoking are excluded. It is not a warm-up for a night out.

Practical details

The ticket office is inside the passage at Malé náměstí 459/11, about 20 metres to the right of the Black Angel bar. Online tickets can be bought up to 30 minutes before the start, and the page warns that once the group has left the start you may not be able to join it. The tour length can vary by 10 to 15 minutes with group size. Both tours run in English or German, and you must speak the chosen language, because translation during the tour is not allowed.

Photos are fine; video needs extra permission. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies to both.

Which one

Take the history tour for the underground and the context. Take the ghost version if you prefer the walk from the dark lanes and the costume. Take an evening ghost walk if you cannot or do not want to go below ground, or if the €27 is too much.

The Old Town lanes around these meeting points are also where you will find the Old Town Hall tower and Astronomical Clock, a few minutes’ walk away. For more tours of this kind see history and ghost tours.
