Klementinum in Prague: Baroque Library and Astronomical Tower, Guided Tour Only?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 4 min read

Red tiled rooftops of Prague Old Town with baroque statues in the foreground and a white tower with a green dome behind

Yes: the Klementinum can only be visited on a guided tour, and the tour is the whole product. The Klementinum Library and Astronomical Tower Guided Tour costs €16, lasts 45 minutes and has 4.5 stars from 6,254 reviews. The provider is Prague City Tourism, which the official site names as the only official ticket seller. It takes you into the Baroque Library, the Meridian Hall and up the Astronomical Tower.

Book ahead: the tours have limited capacity, and the official site does not guarantee tickets at the box office.

What the tour covers

The Klementinum is a former Jesuit college and one of the largest building complexes in Europe, mostly used today by the Czech National Library. The tour has three parts:

  • The Baroque Library Hall. According to the booking page, you see it from behind the fence: frescoes, gilded carvings and large globes.
  • The Meridian Hall, with astronomical instruments, where a beam of sunlight through a hole in the wall once fixed the exact time of noon.
  • The Astronomical Tower, 68 metres high, with a circular viewing balcony over the centre of Prague and the Castle.

The tower is the effort. The official site says the balcony at 52 metres is reached by climbing 172 steep spiral steps, and that there is no lift.

Booking page or official site

The €16 on GetYourGuide is close to the official 380 CZK adult price, and the provider is the same operator, so the question is only convenience and available slots. The booking page tells you to exchange the voucher at the Klementinum ticket office, to go straight to the ticket office without waiting in line, and to meet in the middle of the complex next to the Mirror Chapel. The official site lists the 50% morning discount for the 9:00 am English tour, which is the cheapest way in if you can be there that early. It does not say whether the discount applies to a voucher, so ask at the ticket office.

Who this tour is not for

The official site says the sightseeing route is not wheelchair accessible, that the visit involves a high number of staircases and that visitors take the tour at their own risk, given their fitness and health. The booking page lists wheelchair users as not suitable. Visitors under 15 may enter only with an adult aged 18 or over.

If the stairs are a problem, the Old Town Hall tower has a lift for an extra fee and is described by the city as barrier-free for wheelchair users.

Practical notes

  • The operator reserves the right to change the programme, and a guide may be unavailable.
  • One reviewer who went in the evening advises going before 6 pm, because the library hall is not lit later.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before applies.

Is it worth it

For €16 you get a library hall that is not open to visitors otherwise, an instrument room and a view over the roofs from the top of a tower. If you only want a view and dislike stairs, the Old Town Hall tower is easier. If you like libraries and clocks, this is the better of the two.
